What Is the Best Way to Store Coffee?

Protect the Fresh-Roasted Flavor of Your Java Good Coffee

One of the questions we hear most often at Java Good Coffee is, "What's the best way to store my coffee?"

Since every bag of our coffee is specialty-grade and freshly roasted with your order, proper storage is the key to enjoying the incredible aroma and rich flavor we work so hard to deliver.

Unlike grocery store coffee that may have been sitting on a shelf for months, your Java Good Coffee arrives at your door shortly after roasting. With just a few simple storage tips, you can enjoy that fresh-roasted taste from your first cup to your last.

Buy Whole Bean Whenever Possible

If you really want to experience everything our coffee has to offer, choose whole bean coffee whenever you can.

Whole beans naturally protect the delicate oils and aromas inside each bean. Once coffee is ground, it begins losing freshness much faster because thousands of tiny surfaces are exposed to oxygen.

That's why we always recommend grinding your coffee just before brewing.

Whether you're enjoying our Breakfast Blend, Cowboy Blend, French Roast, or one of our Single Origin coffees, grinding fresh delivers the fullest flavor and aroma.

Ground Coffee Is Still a Great Choice

Don't own a grinder? No problem.

We also offer freshly ground coffee that's roasted with your order. Just remember that ground coffee is best enjoyed a little sooner than whole beans.

After opening your bag:

  • Reseal it immediately.
  • Store it in an airtight container.
  • Keep it away from heat and sunlight.

You'll still enjoy a fantastic cup of fresh-roasted coffee.

Keep Coffee in an airtight container

Fresh coffee's biggest enemy is oxygen.

Every time coffee is exposed to air, it slowly begins to lose the wonderful aromas and flavors that make each cup special.

For the best results:

  • Use an airtight container.
  • Choose one that blocks light.
  • Keep the lid tightly closed after every use.

Many of our customers simply place the original Java Good Coffee bag inside an airtight container for even better protection.

Store Coffee in a Cool, Dark Cabinet

Coffee likes a stable environment.

The ideal storage place is:

  • A kitchen pantry
  • A cabinet away from sunlight
  • A cool cupboard

Avoid storing coffee:

  • Next to the stove
  • Above the oven
  • Near sunny windows
  • Beside heat-producing appliances

Room temperature is perfect.

Never Store Coffee in the Refrigerator

This surprises many people, but the refrigerator is actually one of the worst places to store coffee.

Coffee naturally absorbs moisture and odors from surrounding foods.

That means your delicious coffee could start picking up flavors from:

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Cheese
  • Leftovers

At Java Good Coffee, we roast every order to deliver fresh, clean flavor—not yesterday's leftovers.

Can You Freeze Coffee?

If you've stocked up on several bags of your favorite Java Good Coffee, freezing unopened bags is perfectly fine.

For the best results:

  • Freeze unopened bags.
  • If opened, divide coffee into smaller airtight portions.
  • Remove only what you'll use.
  • Avoid repeatedly thawing and refreezing the same coffee.

When you're ready to enjoy it, simply let the bag come to room temperature before opening.

How Long Will My Java Good Coffee Stay Fresh?

Because every order is freshly roasted, you're already starting with coffee at its peak.

As a general guideline:

Whole Bean Coffee

  • Best enjoyed within about 4–6 weeks after opening

Ground Coffee

  • Best enjoyed within about 2–4 weeks after opening

Keeping your coffee properly stored helps preserve the fresh-roasted flavor we intended you to experience.
